This book is a Resource Book for both Teachers and Students. Book 3 Spelling is not an individual Student Practice Workbook in which students write, as older mainstream upper primary students no longer benefit from Rainbow Writing. The writing of sounds and spelling words is now practised in year appropriate exercise books. In the classroom, the teacher need only purchase one Book 3 Spelling. If teachers wish, they are allowed to photocopy the Sound Reference Pages and Weekly Spelling Lists in Books 3 to 7 Spelling only, to insert into student’s own exercise books. Weekly Spelling Lists often have more words than are required giving teachers the flexibility to choose appropriate spelling lists for average, support and extension students. Book 3 Spelling is also a valuable resource book for students and parents to purchase and use at home.
Book 3 Spelling introduces double syllable spelling words, prefixes, suffixes and word building where two words make one. Students are shown how to add word endings ed, ing and y. Long vowel sound words and words beginning and ending with tricky consonant sounds are the main focus of Book 3 Spelling, using the same graphics and method as Book 2 Spelling. All sounds being learnt have a Sound Reference Page that shows a ‘sound picture’ and all the main letters or letter combinations that spell the sound. Vowel, blend and consonant sounds and word endings are colour-coded for easy student identification. Book 3 Spelling includes a Content Overview and Scope and Sequence, as well as Learning Method Instructions.
Extensive weekly spelling lists are grouped under sounds and the letters that spell that sound. Spelling words where it is helpful link to Write2Spell2Read’s ‘Spelling Rules and Guidelines’ book and purchase of this additional book is essential. Students repeatedly practice writing their weekly spelling words in Book 3 Spelling. A Memory Grid Activity is included to improve working memory. Individual ownership of this Practice Workbook accelerates literacy success.
